PUBLIC HEALTH PROGRAM (PHP) Since 2005, in this program, we have carried out 4 projects which are the followings: 1.MALARIA AWARENESS PROJECT (MAP).
This project has started from 2005
Main activities are the following:
2.House by house teaching sessions about the causes of malaria and how to prevent it.
3.Distribution of mosquitoes nets as one among the ways of preventing malaria.
4.Creating and training of youth anti-malaria clubs.
MAP Target group is KIVUYE population.
Impacts obtained when we completed this project from 2005-2007
1.More than 75% of KIVUYE communities know what causes malaria and how to prevent it (report of our organization during evaluation of this project in 2007, house by house interviews).
2.More than ¾ of KIVUYE population have obtained mosquito nets.
3.More than 9500 mosquitoes'' nets (bed nets) have been distributed to 9500 mothers.
4.15 anti-malaria clubs have been created and trained about malaria.
2.HIV/AIDS PREVETION PROJECT(HPP)
This project has started from 2006
Target population is young people in three sectors of BURERA district which are KIVUYE, GATEBE and BUNGWE sectors.
Results obtained after evaluation of HPP activities 2007:
1.35 BVDA volunteers have been trained about HIV/AIDS issues and have been worked within this project from 2006 to 2007.
2.10 anti-HIV/AIDS clubs have been created and trained about HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention in these 3 sectors.
3.More than 95% of young people in rural villages of these sectors have sufficient knowledge about HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention (record from questionnaires in our anti-HIV/AIDS clubs, evaluation report 2007).
4.4575 condoms have been distributed from 2006-2007 as one powerful way of preventing HIV/AIDS because our young people are sexual active so the way of abstinence is still impossible for some of them targeted (both rural and urban young people).
5.500 peer educators on HIV/AIDS issues have been gained in all 10 anti-HIV/AIDS clubs.
3.ANTI-TOBACCO CAMPAIGN PROJECT (ATCP):
ATCP has started from May, 2009.
Target population: people of BURERA and GICUMBI districts.
Main activities in this project:
1.Campaigns on tobacco smoking effects.
2.Group discussions on tobacco smoking effects.
3.Young people mobilization about fighting against tobacco smoking.
4.Hanging of no smoking posters in the public areas.
Results obtained at the end on 2009:
1.3 campaigns about tobacco effects have been done.
2.Group discussions in 15 secondary schools of BURERA and GICUMBI districts have been carried out.
3.More than 1540 of young people have been mobilized to fight against tobacco smoking in the slogan called "no smoking in the public".
4.1535 posters of "no smoking in the public" have been hanged in the public areas such as markets, schools, health centres, private and public offices.
4.WASH (WATER SANITATION AND HYGIENE PROMOTION) PROJECT
This project has begun since 2006 in collaboration with Burera district.
Target group: population of BUTARO, KIVUYE, GATEBE and BUNGWE sectors.
Main activities:
1.House by house teaching sessions about hygiene and water sanitation.
2.Teaching sessions about good ways of hand washing as one tool of preventing of parasitic diseases.
3.Trainings of health workers in health centers and clinics in these four sectors.
4.Distribution of waste baskets and Sûr'Eau.
5.Teaching sessions about how to make a modern waste bin.
Results due to this project activities are:
1.More than 95% populations of targeted areas have been gained knowledge about hand washing system called "kandagira ukarabe" in Kinyarwanda.
2.75 teaching sessions hygiene and water sanitation have been conducted from 2006 until to 2009.
3.More than 35 health workers have been trained.
4.150 waste baskets have been put in all public areas.
4.75% of this project target population has installed rubbish bins.
5.Respondents from 242 households in 4 villages were interviewed; all used safe water for drinking water. Respondents from 239 households (99%) had heard of Sûr'Eau, the SWS(Safe Water System) disinfectant; 226 (95%) reported having ever used Sûr'Eau, and 166 (73%) reported current use. Current Sûr'Eau use was confirmed in 54% of households.
